Unit 5 Post: The Subtle Mind
1.Compare and contrast the Loving Kindness exercise and the Subtle mind exercise. Explain your experience including the benefits, frustrations etc.
For me Loving Kindness was more relaxing then Subtle Mind, Loving Kindness was hard to do the things the man asked but his voice and the sounds for me were very relaxing. I found myself thinking a lot in Subtle Mind, I was relaxed but I couldn't just release my thoughts. At the end I sort of did, when she talked about disolving the images in your mind. I visualized the thoughts disolving into a blank room. To my surprise I was able to hold that for a few minutes. I have never been able to completely let my mind go with out any thoughts. I more try to focus on one thing, so in this exericse it was the sounds in the background. I think they are the same or very similar to Loving Kindness' sounds. I do not get frustrated at these exercises because I believe that mind has to work to get to this point, I do not expect my body to be physically fit without putting the work into it and maintaining that work. The mind will take just as much work but in a very different way. I am in my last term at school and believe that once I am done and have time to focus on me again I will start to do these types of exercises many times a week. Right now I just do 5-10 minutes of breathing/stretching meditation. To really "disolve" my thoughts will take many more practices.
2.Discuss the connection of the spiritual wellness to mental and physical wellness. Explain how the connection is manifested in your personal life.
For me out of the three I am physically well and believe to a degree I am mental well, spiritual wellness I do not have much of a connection to. I would love to get to the wholness that we are discussing. To get to be whole however you need to be physically, mentally, and spiratually well. I am trying to at least perfect two out of three and then really figure out the spiritual side and how I will incorporate this into my life.

Hi Jessica!
ReplyDeleteI always find it so interesting to hear about other people's experiences, and compare their thoughts and feelings on something to that of my own. Everybody has such a unique and different perspective on things, and it always provides me with a fresh outlook! However, I couldn't agree with you more; the mind takes just as much effort to maintain a mental physique as it does to maintain a physical physique! During the Subtle Mind exercise it was made very clear to me how important it is to train the mind, and until I completed this exercise, I had no idea how much the breath and the mind worked together!
Great blog post, Melissa!
Hello Jessica,
ReplyDeletethis weeks relaxation technique was awesome. I ve never done anything like this so it was a little tough to let my mind focus and relax, but once i did...i did!! I should really check out some sort of techniques that i should do on a regular basis. this could really work out so great for me. I am always overwhelmed with everyday lifestyle stressors, that i find it hard to relax when i need to, that i just crash later..
Hello Jessica,
ReplyDeleteI can truly relate about the feeling of having to wait until school is done to start these exercises. I wish I had time right now to fully absorb this information. I often wonder if I will be able to remember the things I've learned, so I can incorporate them into my life.
Hi Jessica,
ReplyDeleteInteresting as I found Love and Kindness to be more relaxing that Subtle mind too. I need to go back and listen to Subtle Mind one more time but my initial thought was I enjoyed Love and Kindness more.
I am working on my spiritual wellness. I over compensate for my physical wellness as I am very fit physically, but my mental/spiritual being is way out of balance. I can find myself getting emotional at the slightest thing. I have friends who I can rely on to "let it out" but honestly I feel at some point "hopefully soon" I will be able to achieve my spiritual wellness goals.
